WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF VINTAGE-INSPIRED BAGS AND PURSES?
Let's take a look through vintage fashion history!
40’s Handbags and Purses: Patent leather handbags with chain straps and dainty clutches with metal clasp closures were very much the style in the 1940's. Round purses, otherwise known as circle purses with long crossbody straps also made the scene during this iconic fashion era.
50’s Satchels and Handbags: Rockabilly style began influencing fashion in the 1950’s, and this is the era when metal ball-clasp handbags with oversized handles became all the rage. Shoulder bags are the sensible purse of choice, and the 1950s also introduces the stylish and studious leather satchel with belt buckle closure.
60’s Boho Bags, Totes, Beaded Purses, and Backpacks: In the 1960’s, fabric boho bags with bold floral prints, hard-cased box purses, and beautiful beaded purses perfectly complemented the 1960's style era. Beaded handbags were especially popular and stylish oversized tote bags also became the norm. The 60's also marks the first era that the beloved backpack moved out of the classrooms and onto becoming a fashion icon that includes the first transparent backpack.
70’s Shoulder Bags and Saddle Flap Bags: Faux-leather shoulder bags with floral embellishments, embroidery, and patchwork detailing became fashionable in the 1970s. For the working gal in the 70's, a saddle flap bag was perfect for keeping everything together. The disco era also made way for shiny metallic purses, sequin purses, and quirky printed purses.
80’s Fanny Packs, Duffle Bags, and Denim Purses: Rainbow fanny packs, neon canvas duffle bags, drawstring bucket bags, and denim purses covered in pins and patches were all the rage in the 80's. And things get a little wild during this iconic fashion era, resulting in leopard print purses, polka dot purses, purses with ruffles, purses with bows, rainbow purses, unicorn purses, Barbie purses, Hello Kitty purses, Care Bear purses, Strawberry Shortcake purses...the list goes on!
90’s Messenger Bags, Mini Backpacks, and Quilted Purses: Plaid purses came back in a major way during the 1990s fashion era, as well as quilted textile handbags. The backpack shrunk to became a mini must-have, and the fabric sling bag was very popular with the music festival crowds. Messenger bags were the 90's hipster tote of choice, and luxury handbags became majorly mainstream.
